The Joan Mitchell Center Artists’ Studio Building is a new construction single story building of approximately 10,000 sf containing ten light-filled studios, a communal meeting space and a media lab. The studios are the base of the center’s robust Artist in Residence Program providing professional space for artists to work as they experience the local arts community in New Orleans. Adjacent to future artist cottages and the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s offices, it is a major part of the vision for the campus. The project also includes extensive campus wide site work and infrastructure upgrades.
The studios’ soaring ceiling heights feature clerestory windows and skylights bringing in ample natural light for the artists working in the space. The structure is a combination of structural steel and wood framed components. Construction began in April 2014 and was completed in July 2015. A LEED Gold rating is anticipated for the artists’ studio building.
